Sergei Prokofiev (1891 — 1953) is one of the most celebrated Russian composers of classical music. His Violin Concerto No.1 composition was completed in the summer of 1917 alongside with his First Symphony (the Classical), the Third and Fourth Piano Sonatas, and Visions fugitives for Piano. World War I was coming to the end, but Russia was facing unprecedented instability and anarchy which opened the way to the Bolshevik October Revolution. Concerned by the events, Prokofiev left Russia. The work was premiered in Paris October 18, 1923 by Serge Koussevitzky and Marcel Darrieux. In the audience for this performance were Pablo Picasso, Anna Pavlova, Artur Rubinstein and Igor Stravinsky. A few days later the work was performed with piano accompaniment in Soviet Russia by two young musicians in the beginning of their musical careers — Nathan Milstein and Vladimir Horowitz.
But it was a Hungarian violinist Joseph Szigeti who championed the work, introducing it to audiences throughout Europe and America and making its first recording, in 1935, with the London Philharmonic Orchestra, conducted by Sir Thomas Beecham. The violinist wrote in his memoir, With Strings Attached, that he has been fascinated “by its mixture of fairy-tale naiveté and daring savagery in lay-out and texture.”

This live performance by Sergej Krylov and State Academic Symphony Orchestra «E. Svetlanov” was conducted by Vladimir Yurovsky. For full video please visit https://meloman.ru/concert/gosorkestr-imeni-svetlanova-08-09-2016/
